Woman hospitalized after being hit by train

A woman is undergoing treatment in a local hospital after
she was struck by a train Thursday.

The incident occurred around 5 p.m. over the cliff at BluffsPark North in the 3400 block of Scenic Highway.

Officer Nathaniel Aikens said the female – Julia Laureano,
18, of Destin – and a friend – Leah Bateman, 20, of Pensacola - had been takingpictures of each other on and by the railroad tracks.

Aikens said Laureano was injured after she stood next to the
track so her friend could take a picture of her with an oncoming train in thebackground. The train hit Laureano as it passed and dragged her several feet
before she fell off to the side onto some rocks.

The train was southbound and was moving about 40 mph at thetime.
